I made two light boxes this past December (2017) as part of a sustainability-in-art experiment. One is from all found materials (mostly spare bike parts, copper wire, and ply wood) which I used to make a representation of the cosmic cycles of the sun and the earth. I called it “The Wheel In The Sky” and gave it to my cousin who is a mountain bike extraordinaire. For the other light box I used some found materials and vellum sheets (the only thing I bought for this project) and I pressed multiple sheets up against the glass and then lit it from behind, so the silhouette of a meditating being appears only when the lights are turned on. I called this “Be Your Own Light” and gave it to my youngest cousin as she prepares to navigate adulthood.
Overall a successful experiment. You can make something nice out of junk, you just have to be patient, creative and have a little faith in yourself and the art gods. Give it a go! Make something beautiful out of something that is going to get thrown away.
